What is an Immigrant Visa?

An immigrant visa is required of anyone who wishes to enter the United States to reside there permanently, whether or not that person plans to seek employment in the United States.

Visa Categories

U.S. immigration law provides for the issuance of immigrant visas in four general categories:

  1. Diversity Immigrants
    (Diversity Immigrant Visa Program, also known as visa lottery or green card lottery.)

- Diversity visa lottery -

Through the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program (also known as visa lottery, or green card lottery) 55,000 immigrant visas are made available annually to natives of foreign states.

The registration period for the annual Diversity Immigrant Visa Program has ended. Information on next year's DV lottery will be available approximately September 2005.
